The Full Form of YAHOO, What YAHOO Stands For

YAHOO! Is a web service company and one of the pioneers of internet era. Founded in the month of 1994 by Stanford University graduate engineers, Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yahoo was designed to be a directory of other websites and the domain “Yahoo.com” created year after Yahoo was founded.

Yahoo database was organized hierarchically, with main focus on office workers as its target users.

Following the introduction of search engine function in 1995, yahoo became the first online directory and search engine on internet. The company began offering free e-mail following its acquisition of RocketMail in 1997 and also go ahead to acquire BroadCast.com and GeoCities at a whooping price of $5.7 billion and $3.6 billion respectively.

Yahoo! Enjoyed it years of dot-com bubble with its stock price skyrocketing during the era. Yahoo also acquired a number of startups in dot-com burst era including the blogging platform Tumblr.

Yahoo was later acquired by Verizon Communications in 2016 and merged with AOL to form a new entity call Oath Inc.

The name YAHOO was selected because the founders liked the slang definition of a “yahoo” which means “rude, unsophisticated, uncouth.” This is not in any way related to the Yahoo Yahoo Nigerians know, which means “Internet Fraud”.


According to Wikipedia, the word “yahoo” is a backronym for “Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle”. Some replaced the “Organized” with “Officious”. Hence, YAHOO: Yet Another Hierarchically Officious Oracle.

The term “Hierarchically” was used due the manner in which Yahoo database was arranged, while “Officious” described the many office workers who would use Yahoo database and “Oracle” was intended to mean “source of truth and wisdom”.
